CALL OUT: ARTS-EDUCATOR ASSISTANT

About the project:

The Comic Making Workshops + Residency program is a series of free comic making workshops for self-identified Asian (mixed race, South, East, South East, newcomer, new generation, 1.5, LGBTQI-lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, questioning, intersex, and or with disability) youth (16-29). The goal of this project is to financially, culturally, mutually support marginalized Asian youth who are homeless or at risk of being homeless to improve their literacy, creative writing, drawing skills and encourage creative collaboration. Youth will develop strategies to write stories from real-life, design characters, page/layout composition, inking and texting, and put together zine comics. The project is meant to give access to a group of youth interested in building an art community and share a positive space for exploring the complexities and issues around being an Asian in Canada. This project is made possible by the support of Ontario Arts Council.

Role Description:

The Arts Assistant will support the Artist-Educator in all aspects of this exciting project, including: outreach, selecting youth participants, providing one on one support to youth in the development of their comic zine, set up and clean up, event preparation, and evaluation. This position runs November 2016-April 2017, (with 80% of the workload to be expected during the 9-week program), and is an ideal experience for emerging facilitators, community artists, and comic artists or cartoonists. Honorarium, food and TTC provided.

Responsibilities:

1.     Assist in outreaching for the Comic-Making + Residency program
2.     Assist in the interview and selecting process of the youth participants
3.     Provide additional artistic guidance and overall support to youth during the 10- week workshop
4.     Provide additional support in preparing participants’ zine comic in time for SKETCH RAD GRAD Show in March
5.     Provide input and feedback regarding the general operation of the program
6.     Reports to Artist-Educator

Qualifications:

1.     Must have a good understanding of anti-oppressive framework
2.     Have previous background in art facilitation in a community setting with racialized youth
3.     Knowledge of comic-making or drawing is expected
4.     Experience in zine-making or storytelling in any medium is an asset
5.     Familiarity with SKETCH
6.     Must be reliable, with good work ethic, sound judgement and excellent communication skills
